Chevron Painted Bench Restyle

So, you know my love for chevron (like when I painted my staircase chevron)… even my little guy likes to point out things while we’re shopping with (in his own words) “that stripey pattern you like.”

I really do like chevron pattern. I mean really, really like it. I have applied chevron in various ways – from signs to pillows to furniture. Cue old photos…

This is the bench before. The base was already painted a really cool dark gray color and has the perfect patina. It was likely sitting in someone’s workshop for a long time with the smattering of paint in various spots. But I like that about this piece. I also liked that the top was unpainted.

Painting Chevron Pattern

I’ve applied the painted chevron pattern with stencils, tape and/or freehand. I’ve found the taping method works best. Sadly when I try to measure out my triangles, I somehow screw it all up. So, I basically eyeballed the taped-off pattern. It’s not for everyone, but works best for me!

Easy-peasy transformation. I taped off the top and added a few coats of white chalk paint. DIY chalk paint. Because that’s how I roll.
Sprinkle in just a little bit of labor to distress the paint and finished it with a light wax. I love using wax on my painted projects because it leaves a buttery smooth finish. Again, save some bucks and purchase the Minwax version. It works just as well at more than half the cost.
Mudrooms are tight spaces but this bench works well since it is fairly narrow. There’s space underneath for extra pairs of shoes, etc.

How cool is this little brass detail on the bench feet? The details on this vintage bench are just amazing.
